BNSF's St. Joseph Subdivision
Hill Street Junction
The G-BNDARK1-23, led by the BNSF 5370,
heads it's grain loads south towards the UP diamonds.
Hill St. Junction,
located in southwest Lincoln, NE, is where the BNSF's St. Joseph Subdivision
of the Nebraska Division
crosses over the remnants
of the UP's Beatrice Branch at grade, and where the BNSF's Nebraska
City line diverges from
their main. The
name Hill St. Jct. dates back to the days when the UP maintained a manned
interlocking tower at the
crossing. Today,
Van Dorn St. passes over the former site of the tower on an overpass.
Of course, most of the traffic will
move on the BNSF St.
Joe sub, as the UP's Beatrice Branch has been severed south of Lincoln.
The Nebraska City linethat
swings east just after
the diamonds will see a couple of trains a week, mainly coal trains the
the Arbor power plant in Nebraska City along with the occasional local
working out of Hobson Yard to serve some various industries along the track
in Lincoln. The St. Joe sub sees a variety of traffic during the
day, although it is typically dominated by coal traffic to and from connections
in Kansas City. However, the BNSF does also run a few intermodal
trains that can be regularly seen south of Lincoln. Among them, the
Z-DENKCM, which will usually show up in Lincoln in the mid to late afternoon
and make a quick crew change before heading down the St. Joe. Other
traffic will include various intermodal and stack trains, as well as grain
and manifest traffic that can be expected at any time of day.
Seen from the "hill" at Hill St., the
G-MCNOKC heads south on the St. Joe Sub towards Kansas City.
The UP's Beatrice Branch (or what's left
of it) can be seen crossing the BNSF in front of the lead GP50,
and heading north into Lincoln directly
over the first hopper.
The Nebraska City line diverges just south
of the UP diamond, under the Van Dorn St. overpass.
