BNSF and UP around the Lincoln Municipal Airport

Before the CB&Q constructed the Milford cutoff in 1906-07, the mainline west to Ravenna, then known as the "Long Branch", exited Lincoln to the north, paralleling the Union Pacific line out to the area around what is today the Lincoln Municipal Airport.  The line then swung west up several small creek valleys to Seward.  Today, the Milford cutoff is the mainline for the coal conveyor Ravenna Subdivision and the original mainline has been mostly taken up.  Some of the sidings on the UP line are actually built on the old CB&Q right of way.  However, parts of the original mainline still exist.  The BNSF has kept intact a portion of the line branching off of the UP line near the airport.

BNSF SW10 3644 creeps down the rusty rail in Huskerville making it's way down into the old Air Force Base to pick up a gondola from a local scrap operation.

The BNSF 3644 approaches the switches into the scrap operation. Some barracks from the Air Force Base are visible to the left and center.  This area must have been covered in rail at one time, and many of these tracks are still in place.

BNSF 3644 is back on BNSF rails after coming up over UP trackage rights out of Hobson Yard in downtown Lincoln.  Visible in the background is the still under construction Kawasaki Light Rail Plant, where commuter and light rail cars will be assembled.
